A Breakfast Table

Pass the sugar over its
crumbs which wheeze like gravel.
Coffee rings on papered news highlight
despair with vigorous abandon;
over-energetic and breathless.
Tactically the pieces are moved:
rotated, spun and danced across the
over-hard plastic which only squeaks
in occasional dismay.
A spatter of milk raises
a smile and an innate thirst.
The cutlery is a silver
renaissance painting of
taught, merging lines;
hard and soft in anger.
Steam between us weaves with the
motion of our gluttony.
In a heartbeat it’s gone.
